Charles "Dale" Palmer, 94, of Bergholz, Ohio passed away Monday, August 7, 2017 in Steubenville, Ohio.

He was born in Bergholz, OH, August 16, 1922, a son of Charles Oliver and Lera Griffith Palmer.  He is also preceded in death his wife, Ruth Shultz Palmer who died December 25, 2016, a granddaughter, Amy Palmer, by his brother and sister in law, Dean and Glenda Palmer, brother in law, Keg Moretta and three stillborn siblings.

Dale graduated from the old Bergholz High School and entered the Merchant Marines serving in the Atlantic and Mediterranean theaters.  He was severely injured in a bombing raid on his ship and spent months in the VA hospital in Pittsburgh. Dale would never accept medical compensation saying he was able to work. The government later awarded to honorable Merchant Marines a discharge from the US Navy of which he was very proud.

He had been a volunteer fireman in Bergholz, played men's league ball for many years and enjoyed the good natured rivalry with Amsterdam.

He was a charter member of the Bergholz Ruritan Club and a lifelong church member: first of the Methodist Church and then the Presbyterian Church in Bergholz.

Dale was a wealth of history of "old Bergholz".  He and his Dad fished and hunted the hills; a hobby he enjoyed all his life.  When he was old enough, his Dad allowed him to open the pool hall upstairs over the Palmer Variety Store, the building that now houses the Everhart-Bove Funeral Home on Second St.  He was born in that building, lived all his life within a half a block from it and will have his funeral within its walls.

He and Ruth had two children, Robert and Pennie. She and husband Wayne Everhart opened the funeral home in 1976 in the old store building.  After 37 years with Columbia Gas Company, Dale retired and soon after began his 20 year career with the Everhart-Bove Funeral Homes.

He is survived by four grandchildren including Heather Noell Everhart and three great grandchildren and his sister, Vivian Moretta.

Friends will be received at the Everhart-Bove Funeral Home, 287 Second Street, Bergholz on Sunday from 5-8PM where funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM.  The service will be a celebration of Dale's life and faith led by a relative of Dale, the Reverend Larry Hukill.

Full military honors will follow at the Bergholz Cemetery with the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad conducting rites.
