Florence Marie Shepherd Stine died November 7, 2005 in her home at 369 Township Highway 274, Bergholz, Ohio. After fighting the battles of a long illness, she went home peacefully with her family by her bedside. Born May 11, 1936 of Howard and Gladys Cox Shepherd, Florence lived her entire life in the Bergholz area. She married Dean S. Stine July 8, 1952 and they made their lifetime home on the Stine farm in Springfield Township. As wife, mother, and homemaker she became a jack-of-all-trades and master of many due to necessity, strong will and personal challenge. She was there with able hands and solutions to the probleme du jour for family and friends. Her home was always open for celebrations, care giving, and friendship. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.
From tending the orchard or making apple pies, counting calves or carbohydrates; baling hay or canning fruits and vegetables; mending fences or broken hearts, walking the hills on the farm or riding a T-lift to the top of the Zugspitz, Florence Stine was a talented, giving woman who will be missed by all who have been blessed to know her.
Florence is survived by her husband of 53 years Dean S. Stine; daughters Rose M. Portwood (Grove City, Ohio) and Mary Lou Stine (Bergholz, Ohio); grandson Kenneth and Cindy Ritchie Portwood (Stanford, Kentucky); granddaughter Carla and Ronnie Yocum (Stanford, Kentucky); great-grandchildren Ryan, Kelly, Kendra, and Aimee; brother Howard and Donna Stewart Shepherd (Bergholz, Ohio); sisters Josephine and James Uhl (Walhonding, Ohio) and Beulah Snyder (Walhonding, Ohio); and sister-in-law Naoko Yamada Shepherd (Carrollton, Ohio).
Florence is preceded in death by her parents Howard and Gladys Cox Shepherd, infant sister Sarah, sister Myrtle A. Stewart, and brother Alva "Meatball" Shepherd.
