Obituary

George “Ted” Wisener Knapp, age 97, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2026, in Corinth, Texas. Born on January 4, 1929, Ted spent the majority of his life in Steubenville, Ohio, where he built a life centered around faith, family, hard work, and service to others.Ted is now reunited in heaven with the love of his life, Martha Lafferty Knapp of 66 years.

Ted began working at Spahn’s Sweet Home Dairy at a young age and dedicated 40 years to the company as both Milkman and then Plant manager, passing along to his family his lifelong love of ice cream. He later worked for 15 years at National Steel as a technician in Michigan before returning to Richmond, Ohio, to be closer to his daughter and family. Never one to slow down, Ted continued working alongside his granddaughter and her beautiful husband at Don’s Tractor Sales for another 15 years, retiring at the remarkable age of 80.

A man of deep faith, Ted was a longtime member and trustee at Church of the Cross, where he faithfully served his church community for many years. He believed strongly in helping others and was always the first to lend a hand with a project - whether painting, building, repairing, or fixing whatever needed to be done. Known as a true “jack of all trades.”

Ted took great pride in his home and yard. He was an avid gardener whose carefully manicured grass and flower beds reflected his patience, dedication, and love of the outdoors. One of his greatest joys was building his dream retirement home in the country, where he created a place full of warmth, family memories, and hospitality.

Ted was also well known for his beloved Lionel trains as a child, which became a treasured tradition for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Countless memories were made gathered around the train displays, watching them run with excitement and wonder.

As an Eagle Scout, Ted carried the values of service, integrity, leadership, and perseverance throughout his entire life, His example inspired four men in his family to follow in his footsteps and earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Those who knew Ted will remember his steady presence, generous spirit, strong work ethic, and pride. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose legacy lives on through his children, George “Bill” and Carole Jean Knapp, Suzanne and John Ramsey, abd Romaine and Michael Lee; his 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren; along with the countless lives he touched during nearly a century of life.

A celebration of life will be held at Global Methodist Church of the Cross by Pastor Tom Snodgrass, In East Springfield, Ohio, Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11 A.M. The service is followed by a reception where family and friends can share memories of Ted.
