Harold E. Smith (Smitty), 86, of Richmond, Ohio passed away peacefully June 20th, 2016, while surrounded by his family at Trinity West Medical Center in Steubenville, Ohio. He was born in Amsterdam, Ohio on May 22nd, 1931 to Samuel and Ella Smith and was the fourth of five children.
Smitty graduated from Jefferson Union High School in 1949 and quickly married Doris Smith, his high school sweetheart, on July 8th, 1950. They had two children, Richard and Sharon, and were married for 65 years at the time of Doris' passing in September of 2015.
Smitty became a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 490/495 on November 7th, 1950. Smitty served the local as an active member for well over fifty years before his retirement and has been a member for 65 years.
Smitty was an active member of Unionport Chapter #360 of the Ohio Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Unionport Lodge #333 of the Grand Lodge of Ohio of the Free and Accepted Masons for 54 years.
Smitty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Steubenville, and he served the Lord his whole life. Smitty could always be found at work on one church/civic project or another allowing his expertise and his work to display his love for the Lord for all to see. If he wasn't at work, you could always find Smitty mowing his grass, running his bulldozer at the farm, working in his woodshop or watching wrestling.  Through all of this, he shared with everyone who knew him a legacy of patience, precision, loyalty, excellence, and charity that will survive long after his passing.
Smitty is preceded in death by his wife, Doris Smith; his father and mother, Samuel and Ella Smith; his brothers, Stanley (Charlene) and Glenn (Lee) Smith; sister, Louise (Mervin) Moore; sister-in-law, Helen Ann Henry; brothers-in-law, Harry and Roy Smith and great granddaughter, Margaret (Maggie) Evans.
Smitty will be lovingly remembered his children, Richard (Christine) Smith and Sharon (Mark) Evans; his brother-in-law, Charles (Avis) Henry; and sister-In-Laws, Barbara and Carol Henry; and his brother, Robert (Diane) Smith.  Smitty will forever be remembered as "Papa" by his grandchildren Belinda (Joseph) Longo,  Jamie (Sara)Evans, Heather (Brian) Cooper, Isaac (Megan) Evans, Krystal (Jake) D'Amico, and Sarah Culler and his great grandchildren Evan and Eric Longo; Rebecka, Zachary, and Matthew Evans; Josie Barker and Jayna Cooper; and Isabella Evans.
Memorial donations in Smitty's honor may be sent to the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society at 6155 Rockside Road, Suite 202, Independence, OH 44131. Smitty's life will be celebrated at 11am on June 23rd at First Baptist Church, 334 Cedar Ave, Steubenville, OH with Pastor John Westling officiating.  Send condolences online at www.everhart-bovefuneralhomes.com.
