Homer Lewis Christen, 94, of Irondale , OH , passed away peacefully on December 8, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born May 29, 1920 in Irondale , OH , a son of the late Arch and Winnie ( Rogers ) Christen.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Martha L. ( Carson ) Christen whom he married on November 20, 1941 and who passed away April 16, 2010 ; brother, Warren Christen; sister, Geraldine Baker; and his beloved dog, Tugger.
Lewis was drafted during WWII but, with other local young farmers, he was sent home to the farm. They were told, "You are going to feed the world", and throughout the duration he raised cattle, chickens, pigs, and field crops for the war effort. He was a lifelong member of the Bergholz Church of Christ where he held many different positions, including teaching Sunday School. He attended the New Somerset Christian Church as well. Lewis was dedicated to farming and a committed environmentalist. Known as the "Mayor of Yellow Creek", he was also an authority on local history. He retired from Titanium Metals in Toronto , OH .
Lewis is survived by his children, Beverly Christen of Irondale , OH , Elaine Christen of Irondale , OH , David (Linda) Christen of Cheat Lake, WV and Donna (Donald) Call of Carrollton.
Friends will be received at the Everhart-Bove Funeral Home, 285 Second St. , Bergholz on Thursday from 10 AM until time of services at 11 AM with Robert Randolph officiating.
Burial will follow at Mooretown Presbyterian Cemetery .
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valley Hospice, 380 Summit Ave. , Steubenville , OH .
