Obituary

Leo Benny Scopel, 88, of Bergholz, Ohio, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 12, 1937, Leo lived a full, hardworking life rooted in love, service, and simple joys.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Leo served his country with honor and never lost his deep love for America. After his service, he spent many years working as a coal miner — a testament to his grit, determination, and dedication to providing for his family.

Leo shared 44 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gloria Scopel, whose memory he cherished deeply. Together they built a home filled with warmth and laughter — a legacy that continues to shine through their children and grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Casamiro and Isabella Scopel, his dear wife Gloria, and two brothers. Leo is survived by his four children, Gino (Crystal) Scopel, Susan (Aaron) Lahman, Tina (Kharl) Schrode, and Thomas Scopel; his grandchildren Joseph and Dane Lahman, Paige Ann and Zachariah Scopel, Cara Denaro; and his precious great-granddaughter Emerson Benny, who brought him endless joy; and two brothers, Attilio (Rosemary) and Eurileo Scopel.

Known for his steady hands and creative mind, Leo had a lifelong passion for woodworking and tinkering. Whether he was building something from scratch or fixing what others thought was beyond repair, he could always be found in his workshop, a smile on his face and many projects in progress.

He had a joyful spirit and a deep love for polka music — few things made him happier than picking up his accordion and filling the room with lively tunes. And, of course, no memory of Leo would be complete without his fondness for Mail Pouch, often accompanied by his signature saying: "It'll put hair on your chest." His humor, generosity, and easygoing nature made him beloved by all who knew him.

Leo will be remembered for his kindness, his craftsmanship, his patriotic spirit, and the love he poured into everything he did. His presence will be deeply missed, but his laughter and lessons, love and hard work will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

A celebration of Leo's life will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Everhart-Bove Funeral Home, 285 Second Street, Bergholz, OH 43908. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leo's memory to Hospice of the Western Reserve, Medina, Ohio, whose care and compassion meant so much to him and his family.
