MERLE A. COE, 95, of Tipp City, OH, formerly of Carrollton, OH, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Hearth and Home of Vandalia, OH.
He was born in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late Merle and Emma (Korner) Coe. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Loris (Grimm) Coe whom he married August 31, 1939 and who died July 16, 2006.
He served in the US Navy during WWII and then during the Korean War in the Naval Reserves. Mr. Coe was Commanding Officer of a landing ship tank in both tours.
Mr. Coe retired in 1982 from the Carrollton School System where he taught math and science. He was a Carrollton Post Office rural mail carrier for 28 years and was a Boy Scout leader for 20 years. He was a Protestant by faith.
He held memberships in Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, the retired teachers associations, the Carrollton Historical Society and the National Woodcarvers Association.
He is survived by two sons, Merle Coe of Washington, DC and Arthur Coe and wife Lenor of Clinton, Wisconsin, by two daughters, Lorle Jost and husband Ernest of Camden, TN and Elizabeth Ball and husband, Robert of Tipp City, OH and by 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date for Mr. Coe by his family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Acclaim Hospice, 7887 Washington Village Dr., Dayton, OH 45459. A scholarship fund in their memory will be set up next year.
