Helen Flenniken Obituary

Helen Flenniken 91 of East Springfield, Ohio passed away Saturday, March 13, 2021 at Valley Hospice Care Center.

She was born April 28, 1929 in Richmond, Ohio a daughter of the late Fred and Bertha (Caswell) Devore. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Flenniken; sister, Mary Edith Barker and Frederick “Bud” Devore.

Helen grew up as a farm girl. She married Jay Flenniken on November 15, 1947. She and her husband took up house keeping on a vacated farm in Salem Twp. She helped convert it to a diary farm and did the milking and feeding when her husband was working in the steel mill. Later on they converted it to a beef farm before selling. During her child rearing days she sold Avon for supplementary household income. She was a member of the local PTA and the Junior Womens Club.

In the 60’s and 70’s she managed the grocery store portion of J & H sales/ service that she and Jay owned. After selling that business she worked retail sales at the Allensworth furniture store until she completed cosmetology schooling. She then opened Helen’s Gals & Guys beauty and barber shop until she retired. She was a member of the yaMcCook Area USBC Bowling Association for 20 years. She was not afraid of anything including a Nascar ride along at Charlotte Speedway and a hot air balloon ride to celebrate her 80th birthday.

She is survived by her children, Phil (Mary) Flenniken, Pete (Bettina) Flenniken, and Cherri Fisher; grandchildren, Valerie (Michael) Stine, Jason Flenniken, Brad (Cindy) Scott, and Natalie (Dylan) Demas; great-grandchildren, Jennie Stine, Daria Scott, Nathan Scott and Grayson Demas.

Memorial contributions in her name can be made to East Springfield Church of the Cross or Bergholz Community Foundation.

Private family services will be held and burial at East Springfield cemetery.
